This thangka depicts Khen Lob Chö Sum, the Three Founders of Buddhism in Tibet: Shantarakshita, Guru Padmasambhava, and King Trisong Detsen. Together they represent scholarship, tantric realization, and devoted patronage— the essential forces that established and preserved the Dharma in Tibet.

This thangka depicts Khen Lob Chö Sum — the Abbot, the Master, and the Dharma King who established Buddhism in Tibet and laid the foundation of the Nyingma tradition.

At the center is Guru Padmasambhava (Lobpon), the tantric master who embodied the power of Vajrayāna realization. He represents the experiential transmission of mantra, the subjugation of obstacles, and the direct application of enlightened skillful means necessary for the Dharma to take root.

Accompanying him is Khenpo Shantarakshita, the great Indian abbot and scholar, who represents monastic discipline, philosophical clarity, and the systematic establishment of the Buddha’s teachings. His presence affirms the importance of ethical conduct, study, and correct view.

Completing the triad is Chögyal Trisong Detsen, the Dharma King of Tibet, who symbolizes royal patronage, faith, and responsibility for protecting and sustaining the teachings. His role reflects the union of spiritual authority and worldly support required for the flourishing of the Dharma.

Together, the Three embody the complete conditions for the establishment of Buddhism:
Scholarship (Khenpo), Realization (Lobpon), and Supportive Authority (Chögyal).
A Khen Lob Chö Sum thangka serves as a reminder that the Dharma thrives through the harmonious cooperation of wisdom, practice, and committed support.
