This thangka depicts Shakyamuni Buddha at the moment of awakening, seated in vajra (full lotus) posture upon a lotus seat beneath the Bodhi tree. His right hand is in Bhūmisparśa Mudrā (earth-touching gesture), affirming his enlightenment and the triumph of wisdom over delusion, while his left hand rests in dhyāna mudrā, holding an alms bowl that symbolizes meditation, renunciation, and spiritual nourishment.
Surrounding the Buddha are the Five Excellent Disciples, seated respectfully around him. They represent the first recipients of the Dharma and the beginning of the Buddha’s teaching activity following his enlightenment. Their presence signifies the First Turning of the Wheel of Dharma and the establishment of the Sangha.
The Bodhi tree rising behind the Buddha marks the sacred site of enlightenment at Bodh Gaya and symbolizes perfect awakening, stability, and the shelter of the Dharma.
Together, this thangka expresses the union of awakening, teaching, and lineage, serving as a powerful support for meditation, faith, and contemplation of the Buddha’s path to liberation.
