This thangka depicts Maitreya Buddha in his bodhisattva form, seated on a lotus throne in a relaxed posture, with both feet resting downward, signifying his readiness to appear in the world as the future Buddha. His hands form the Dharmachakra Mudrā, symbolizing the turning of the Wheel of Dharma and his future role as a great teacher who will restore and renew the Buddha’s teachings.
From his hands rise two lotus stems: the right lotus supports a Dharma Wheel, representing the revival and teaching of the Dharma, while the left lotus holds a sacred vase, symbolizing long life, abundance, fulfillment of aspirations, and spiritual prosperity.
Maitreya’s golden body color reflects loving-kindness, hope, and compassion for all beings. He is adorned with a five-jeweled crown, earrings, necklaces, and flowing silk garments, identifying him as a bodhisattva who remains engaged with the world. A radiant halo and multicolored aureole surround his serene form, while the throne, supported by snow lions, signifies fearless compassion, strength, and enlightened authority.
