This thangka depicts Red Avalokiteśvara, Gyalwa Gyatso, in yab-yum (union), expressing the inseparable unity of great compassion and transcendent wisdom. His red complexion signifies magnetizing enlightened activity and the compassionate power to draw all beings toward liberation. Seated in meditative posture upon a lotus throne, he embodies the perfected realization of the bodhisattva path.
Above the central deity appears Amitābha Buddha, the spiritual source and lineage head of Avalokiteśvara, bestowing blessings and empowerment. On the right side stands Hevajra, representing profound tantric method and transformative power, while on the left appears Vajravārāhī, the embodiment of supreme wisdom and the realization of emptiness. At the base is Black Mahākāla, the fierce Dharma protector, guarding the teachings and removing obstacles to the path.
Together, these deities form a complete Vajrayāna mandala, expressing the unity of compassion, wisdom, method, lineage blessing, and protective activity.
